Lima, Peru | 31 July 2026 – Peru’s newly appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carlos Espá, has announced that the country’s new administration will prioritize strengthening diplomatic and economic relations with the United States, describing Washington as one of Peru’s most important strategic partners.
Speaking shortly after assuming office as part of President Keiko Fujimori’s newly formed conservative cabinet, Minister Espá emphasized that Peru is committed to fostering closer cooperation with the United States across key areas, including trade, investment, security, and regional development.
The Foreign Minister also expressed optimism that the U.S. administration would review the latest tariff measures introduced under President Donald Trump, noting that continued dialogue remains essential to expanding bilateral trade and creating new economic opportunities for both nations.
Beyond strengthening ties with Washington, the new government has outlined a broader diplomatic agenda aimed at rebuilding relationships across Latin America. Minister Espá confirmed that Peru will pursue efforts to restore and enhance diplomatic engagement with Mexico and Colombia, while initiating the first steps toward re-establishing relations with Venezuela as part of a wider strategy to promote regional stability, cooperation, and constructive dialogue.
Carlos Espá brings extensive diplomatic and communications experience to the role, having previously served for several years as Communications Director at the United States Embassy in Lima. His appointment has been widely viewed as an indication that Peru’s foreign policy under the Fujimori administration will place renewed emphasis on strengthening its partnership with the United States while maintaining constructive engagement with regional neighbors.
