Washington, D.C. | 4 August 2026 – A coalition of Democratic-led U.S. states and advocacy organizations has filed lawsuits challenging a new policy introduced by the Trump administration that permits federal immigration authorities to access personal information of families enrolled in a federal cash-assistance program for low-income households with children.

The legal actions, filed on Monday, seek to block the implementation of the policy, arguing that it raises significant concerns over privacy rights, data protection, and the use of sensitive government records for immigration enforcement purposes.

According to the lawsuits, the contested policy authorizes federal agencies responsible for administering public assistance programs to share beneficiary information with immigration authorities, a move opponents say could discourage eligible families from seeking essential social support and undermine public confidence in government services.

The cases represent the latest in a growing series of legal disputes surrounding the administration’s broader efforts to expand immigration officials’ access to personal data maintained by various federal agencies. Advocacy groups and state governments contend that such data-sharing practices could have far-reaching implications for millions of individuals whose information is collected through public benefit programs.

Supporters of the administration’s approach argue that improved information sharing between federal agencies strengthens immigration enforcement and enhances the government’s ability to verify eligibility for public benefits. Critics, however, maintain that the policy risks compromising personal privacy, weakening safeguards around sensitive data, and creating fear among vulnerable communities.

The lawsuits are expected to move through the federal court system in the coming months, where judges will determine whether the policy can take effect while the legal challenges proceed.

The outcome of the cases could have significant implications for the future of data-sharing practices between U.S. government agencies, immigration enforcement, and the administration of public assistance programs, potentially shaping national policy on privacy, immigration, and social welfare for years to come.
