Capital One Defends Closure of Trump Organization Accounts, Cites Anti-Money Laundering Review

Washington, D.C. | 3 August 2026 – Capital One Financial has formally defended its decision to close hundreds of bank accounts associated with the Trump Organization, stating in a recent federal court filing that the action followed an extensive anti-money laundering (AML) review conducted in accordance with the bank’s internal compliance policies and federal regulatory guidance.

The filing, submitted in response to an ongoing lawsuit brought by the Trump Organization and Eric Trump, marks the first time a financial institution has publicly linked its decision to terminate the business relationship to anti-money laundering compliance considerations rather than political motivations.

According to Capital One, the closure of more than 300 Trump-affiliated bank accounts, announced in March 2021, resulted from months of analysis by the bank’s anti-money laundering specialists. The institution emphasized that the decision was based on established risk management procedures and regulatory expectations governing financial institutions.

Importantly, Capital One clarified that it has not accused the Trump Organization of engaging in illegal money laundering. Instead, the bank maintains that the account closures reflected its internal compliance assessment and risk evaluation process, consistent with banking industry standards.

The Trump Organization and Eric Trump filed suit in federal court in Florida in March 2025, alleging that the accounts were closed because of political bias and what they described as “debanking” motivated by the political climate following the events of January 6, 2021. The plaintiffs contend that the decision reflected ideological discrimination rather than legitimate banking concerns.

Capital One has asked the court to dismiss the lawsuit, arguing that the allegations are unsupported by the facts and that the plaintiffs have repeatedly failed to present a legally sufficient claim. The bank characterized the allegations of political pretext as “misguided”, asserting that they rely on selective interpretations of documents rather than the broader factual record.

The court has previously dismissed two versions of the complaint while allowing the plaintiffs opportunities to amend their filings. Capital One argues that the most recent amended complaint continues to suffer from the same legal deficiencies identified by the court.

The case unfolds against the backdrop of an increasingly contentious national debate over alleged politically motivated “debanking.” During his second term, President Donald Trump has made the issue a policy priority, signing an executive order in August 2025 prohibiting discriminatory denial of banking services based on political or ideological affiliation. The administration has also intensified scrutiny of major financial institutions over their account management practices.

The dispute further reflects a broader history of legal confrontations between President Trump and major financial institutions. During his first administration, Trump pursued legal action against Capital One and Deutsche Bank in efforts to prevent the release of financial records requested by congressional investigators. Those cases, along with ongoing debates surrounding anti-money laundering compliance, have kept the intersection of financial regulation, political accountability, and banking practices under close public and legal scrutiny.

As the litigation progresses, the outcome could have significant implications for how banks balance regulatory compliance obligations with allegations of political discrimination, potentially influencing future standards governing account closures, risk management, and financial sector oversight in the United States.
