Global Hedge Funds See July Setback as Technology Selloff Erodes 2026 Gains, JPMorgan Reports

London, United Kingdom | 4 August 2026 – Global hedge funds experienced a challenging month in July as a sharp reversal in technology-related investments reduced a portion of their strong year-to-date performance, according to a new market analysis by JPMorgan.

The report indicates that hedge funds surrendered nearly 3% of their accumulated gains during July, primarily due to the unwinding of heavily concentrated positions in technology stocks. Despite the monthly decline, the industry remains approximately 8% higher for the year across all investment strategies, reflecting continued resilience amid heightened market volatility.

Market conditions were influenced by geopolitical tensions, including the continuation of the conflict involving Iran, which contributed to a surge in global crude oil prices and increased uncertainty across financial markets. The resulting volatility triggered a broad selloff in semiconductor and technology stocks, with a leading U.S. technology index declining by more than 7% during the month and technology shares across Asia also experiencing significant losses.

According to JPMorgan, many hedge funds had built sizeable positions in technology companies, creating what market analysts describe as “crowded trades.” As market sentiment weakened, many investors were unable to exit these positions at favorable prices, leading to substantial trading losses.

The report noted that while overall leverage levels among hedge funds ended July at approximately the same levels as they began, borrowing fluctuated considerably throughout the month. On a longer-term basis, leverage across the hedge fund industry remains close to historic highs, although still below the peak levels recorded over the past year.

Performance varied significantly across investment strategies. Multi-strategy hedge funds proved relatively resilient, recording average losses of 2.2% during July, while Asia-Pacific equity-focused managers experienced considerably steeper declines, averaging 9.4% losses. Meanwhile, global quantitative equity hedge funds, which rely on algorithmic and statistical models rather than traditional company fundamentals, posted average monthly losses of 5%.

JPMorgan also identified quantitative hedge funds as the most highly leveraged investment strategy within its coverage universe, estimating average leverage at approximately 450%, underscoring the elevated level of market exposure maintained by these firms.

The report further highlighted an emerging seasonal investment pattern in which hedge funds reduce exposure to U.S. equities during July before gradually rebuilding positions later in the year, particularly in September. According to the bank, this year’s reduction in overall market exposure—or “de-grossing”—was among the most significant observed since 2020 and 2022, reflecting heightened caution amid uncertain market conditions.

Separately, Goldman Sachs reported that global stock-picking hedge funds recorded their second-worst monthly performance in four years, while Asia-focused equity managers experienced the weakest monthly returns since the investment bank began tracking the strategy.

JPMorgan attributed much of July’s weakness to the reversal of momentum trades, investment strategies that seek to capitalize on the continued outperformance of recent market leaders. As technology stocks reversed course, these positions became a significant source of losses across the hedge fund industry.

Despite the challenging month, analysts note that hedge funds continue to maintain relatively high long-term exposure to the technology sector, suggesting that many institutional investors remain optimistic about the sector’s long-term growth prospects even as they navigate short-term market volatility.

The July performance serves as a reminder of the risks associated with concentrated investment positions and highlights the importance of portfolio diversification, prudent risk management, and disciplined leverage strategies in an increasingly unpredictable global financial environment.
