Winter Games action continued on Tuesday as Yannick Schwaller led Switzerland to a commanding 9–4 victory over Sweden in the men’s curling competition, extending Switzerland’s unbeaten run and ending the defending champions’ medal hopes.
The Swiss team now sit top of the round-robin standings with a flawless six wins from six matches. Sweden, skipped by Niklas Edin, were already under pressure following a 7–3 loss to Germany on Monday. Tuesday’s defeat eliminated their remaining mathematical chance of reaching the playoffs, leaving the reigning Olympic champions joint-ninth with one win from seven games.
Speaking after the match, Schwaller praised his team’s preparation and mindset.
“We worked very hard and had many constructive discussions leading up to this,” he said. “Everything is coming together well, and we’re playing with a lot of confidence. We’re enjoying each other and the moment.”
In other matches, China, skipped by Xiaoming Xu, edged United States 8–5 in a closely contested game that was tied heading into the final end. Meanwhile, the Czech Republic secured a 9–7 victory over Germany, marking the Czech men’s team’s first-ever win in Olympic curling, following previous successes only in mixed doubles competition.
Each team will play nine matches during the round-robin phase, which continues later on Tuesday. The top four teams will advance to the semi-finals later this week.
