Simpiwe “Sim” Tshabalala (South Africa) is a highly respected lawyer, corporate executive, and banker who has served as Group Chief Executive Officer of Standard Bank Group, the largest banking group on the African continent, since 2013. Born in Hlabisa, KwaZulu‑Natal in 1967, he grew up in Soweto and trained in law and finance, earning degrees from Rhodes University, a Master of Laws summa cum laude from Notre Dame University in the United States, and advanced legal and management qualifications, including from the University of the Witwatersrand and Harvard University. Tshabalala began his career in structured finance before joining Standard Bank in 2000, rising through leadership positions in project finance, personal and business banking, and corporate and investment banking, before becoming CEO of Standard Bank South Africa and ultimately Group CEO. Under his leadership, the bank has maintained its position as a cornerstone of African finance, and he also serves as Vice‑President and Treasurer of the Institute of International Finance, is a Fellow of the Institute of Bankers of South Africa, and an Honorary Professor at Stellenbosch Business School, reflecting his influence and stature in the financial services sector.
