Segenet Michele Kelemu (Ethiopia) is a globally respected molecular plant pathologist and agricultural scientist, currently serving as the Director General of the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE), where she leads research and innovation to improve agricultural productivity and livelihoods across Africa. Her pioneering work on crop disease resistance and sustainable agricultural solutions has contributed significantly to food security on the continent. Kelemu has held key leadership positions at institutions including the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), the World Bank, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Her contributions to science have earned her numerous international honors, including election as a Foreign Associate of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, recognition on the BBC 100 Women list, and fellowships in multiple scientific academies. Through her research and leadership, Kelemu has advanced understanding of plant–pathogen interactions, strengthened scientific capacity in Africa, and established herself as a leading figure in agricultural science and sustainable development.
