Gamal Hassan (H.E.)

Gamal Mohamed Hassan is currently the Minister of Commerce and Industry of Somalia, a seasoned Somali-Canadian politician, senior diplomat, and development leader with extensive experience in national government, regional institutions, and international engagement. He previously served as Minister of Planning, Investment and Economic Development for the Federal Government of Somalia, where he was one of the longest-serving cabinet members and helped steer economic strategy and development policy. Before that, he represented Somalia abroad as Ambassador to Kenya and as Permanent Representative to UNEP and UN-Habitat in Nairobi. Hassan has also held leadership roles within the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), including as Director and as IGAD Special Representative for Climate Change and Environmental Affairs, reflecting his regional standing on sustainable development issues. In late 2025, he returned to the Somali federal cabinet as Minister of Commerce and Industry, bringing his broad expertise to efforts to revitalize trade, industrial growth, and investment in the country.
