Argentina’s president, Javier Milei, has sacked his foreign minister, Diana Mondino, after the country voted in favour of lifting the US economic embargo on Cuba at the United Nations. Argentina was one of 187 countries that supported the non-binding UN resolution on Wednesday. Only the US and Israel voted to oppose the resolution. It was the first time since Milei’s arrival in office that Argentina has not aligned itself with the US and Israeli governments. Mondino has been replaced by the ambassador to Washington, Gerardo Werthein. Following the move, President Milei’s office said Argentina was “categorically opposed to the Cuban…
Civil rights leaders believe that a decision handed down by the Supreme Court on Wednesday could lay the framework for post-election challenges. The high court’s conservative majority ruled to block an order from a federal judge that would have reinstated some 1,600 individuals to Virginia’s registered voter count. Those individuals were removed in accordance with an executive order by Gov. Glenn Youngkin that required the daily purge of self-identified noncitizens from the state’s voter rolls. The Aug. 7 executive order brought lawsuits from immigration and civil rights groups, as well as the Justice Department, all of which alleged that it violated…
England captain Ben Stokes is a doubt for the first Test against Pakistan in Multan as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury. Stokes, 33, has been out since the beginning of August, missing the 2-1 series victory over Sri Lanka. England trained in Multan for the first time on Friday. All-rounder Stokes batted in the nets and bowled a handful of deliveries off a few paces. He indicated last week he is unlikely to bowl at the beginning of this three-match series, which gets under way on Monday. Opener Zak Crawley told BBC Sport: “He seems to be…
Belgium captain Kevin de Bruyne has asked for time off from the national team as the Manchester City playmaker looks to manage his playing time. The 33-year-old has missed City’s past four fixtures after sustaining a thigh injury in September’s 0-0 draw against Inter Milan in the Champions League. De Bruyne, who is on course to return to action in mid-October, was set to be left out of Belgium’s Nations League squad for matches against Italy and France later this month through injury. But Belgium boss Domenico Tedesco says De Bruyne has requested to miss November’s matches against Italy and Israel in…
The Indian government has opposed petitions in the top court that seek criminalisation of marital rape, saying it would be “excessively harsh”. The federal home ministry told the Supreme Court that “a man does not have a fundamental right” to force sex on his wife, but there were enough laws to protect married women against sexual violence. The top court is hearing petitions seeking to amend a British-era law that says a man cannot be prosecuted for rape within marriage. Violence within marriage is rampant in India – according to a recent government survey, one in 25 women have faced…
A long-running legal battle between ex-Chelsea and Arsenal midfielder Lassana Diarra and Fifa has ended with the European Court of Justice finding in favour of the former player. Diarra’s legal team challenged some of Fifa’s rules after the termination of his contract with Russian club Lokomotiv Moscow in 2014. They argued some of the rules imposed by football’s global governing body restricted his freedom of movement and breached competition law, and sued Fifa for damages. The court’s judgement says that, by refusing to provide Diarra with an international transfer certificate (ITC) for a proposed move to Belgian club Charleroi in…
Former President Barack Obama will hit the campaign trail for Vice President Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz starting next Thursday, Oct. 10, through election day, according to a senior campaign official. The first stop will be in Pennsylvania in the Pittsburgh area before Obama embarks on a campaign blitz across the battleground states in the final 27 days. Obama held a Los Angeles fundraiser for Harris in September and — along with former First Lady Michelle Obama — gave a speech at the Democratic National Convention in August. Meanwhile, Harris recently enlisted the help of former Republican Rep. Liz…
A Nevada Republican politician who ran unsuccessfully two years ago for state treasurer was found guilty Thursday of using funds raised for a statue honoring a slain police officer for personal costs, including plastic surgery. A jury convicted Michele Fiore, a former Las Vegas city councilwoman and state lawmaker, of six counts of federal wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, KLAS-TV in Las Vegas reported. The weeklong trial in U.S. District Court in Nevada began last week. Each count carries a possible penalty of 20 years in prison. Fiore, who has been suspended without pay from her current…
John Sterling returned to the New York Yankees’ radio broadcast booth on Tuesday night, five months after announcing his retirement. Sterling had retired in April, a few weeks into his 36th season. He was back working with partner Suzyn Waldman on the WFAN broadcast for the start of the team’s final regular-season homestand. Sterling, who turned 86 on July 4, intends to work the rest of the regular season and all postseason Yankees games.
Hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs is currently in federal custody awaiting trial on charges of racketeering and sex trafficking. His arrest last week in New York comes amid a series of civil suits alleging sexual assault and physical violence, some going back to the 1990s. The 11th and latest accuser to come forward, Thalia Graves, claims Combs and his bodyguard drugged, bound and raped her in 2001, and filmed the incident. The Harlem-born rapper has denied criminal wrongdoing. Combs, 54, was arrested on Monday 16 September in a New York hotel on charges of racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking by force…
