Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador says the United States is partially responsible for a wave of violence in the state of Sinaloa that has left dozens dead in the past two weeks, with bodies repeatedly found on public streets and highways. López Obrador suggested during a press conference Thursday that Washington helped stir up enmity between factions of the Sinaloa drug cartel after arresting two cartel leaders in the US. On July 25, Sinaloa Cartel co-founder Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada was arrested along with Joaquín Guzmán López, son of drug kingpin “El Chapo” Guzmán, after they landed near El Paso, Texas on a small plane. Zambada…
Donald Trump has been briefed by US intelligence on threats from Iran to assassinate him, his campaign said. The Republican presidential candidate was briefed “regarding real and specific threats from Iran to assassinate him in an effort to destabilize and sow chaos in the United States”, the campaign said in a statement. It did not elaborate on the claims, and it was not immediately clear if the threats it referred to were new or had been previously reported. The Iranian government did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but Tehran has previously denied US claims of interfering in…
Sri Lankans are voting for a new president in the first election since mass protests sparked by the country’s worst-ever economic crisis unseated the leader in 2022. Saturday’s vote is widely regarded as a referendum on economic reforms meant to put the country on the road to recovery. But many are still struggling to make ends meet because of tax hikes, and cuts to subsidies and welfare. Multiple analysts predict that economic concerns will be front of mind for voters in what is shaping up to be a close race. “The country’s soaring inflation, skyrocketing cost-of-living and poverty have left…
After thousands of pagers and radio devices exploded in two separate incidents in Lebanon – injuring thousands of people and killing at least 37 – details are still being pieced together as to how such an operation was carried out. Lebanon and Hezbollah, whose members and communication systems were targeted, have blamed Israel – though Israel is yet to comment. The BBC has followed a trail from Taiwan, to Japan, Hungary, Israel and back to Lebanon. Here are the unanswered questions. How were the pagers compromised? Some early speculation suggested that the pagers could have been targeted by a complex…

Another 16,000 residents in the Niigata and Yamagata prefectures north of Ishikawa were also told to evacuate, the AFP news agency said. The Japan Meteorological Agency (Jma) has issued a heavy rain emergency – the highest alert level – for parts of the region. Japan’s public broadcaster NHK quoted…
Hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs was denied bail again on Wednesday after his lawyers argued for the second time that he should be released from “horrific” jail conditions while awaiting trial in a sex-trafficking case. A New York federal judge remanded the musician into custody on Tuesday after prosecutors argued he was a “serious flight risk”. Mr Combs, 54, was arrested this week, accused of running a criminal enterprise from at least 2008 that relied on drugs and violence to force women to “fulfil his sexual desires”, according to prosecutors. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges. Instead of…

Harvey Weinstein pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a new indictment charging him with criminal sex act in the first degree. He was wheeled into a Manhattan courtroom wearing a black suit, white shirt and tie. The former movie mogul is charged in the new indictment based on the allegations of a woman who said he sexually assaulted her on one occasion in 2006 at a Manhattan hotel. He is also charged in a previous New York State Supreme Court indictment with criminal sexual act in the first degree and rape in the third degree, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said.…
Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear banned the use of “conversion therapy” on minors in Kentucky on Wednesday, calling his executive order a necessary step to protect children from a widely discredited practice that tries to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity through counseling. The governor used his executive powers after Republicans who control the state legislature repeatedly blocked efforts to enact a state law banning the practice. Beshear said he would no longer wait for others to “do what’s right.” “My faith teaches me that all children are children of God,” Beshear said during the signing ceremony at the…
In remarks on Thursday at the Economic Club of Washington, D.C., President Biden will celebrate the progress of the American economy, but stop short of declaring victory, senior advisors told ABC News on a call previewing the remarks. Biden said in a post on X that he will speak about what the first key rate cut since 2020 and falling inflation “means for Americans.” “President Biden is going to speak to a new milestone, inflation and interest rates are falling at the same time, employment, wages and GDP are rising,” White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients told reporters. “I want to be really…
